The Family
Families are also affected by eating disorders. Read the following for
information on how to survive an eating disorder.
- Keep notes about behavior that seems to be a problem.
- Do some research on your own so you can be familiar with the problem.
- If the family member is your child, be responsible and authoritative
about getting help.
- Be patient.
- Do not keep the condition a secret. Find a support group, clergy, a
therapist, or all three.
- Tell your family member what is bothering you, and tell him or her
that you will help.
- Accept that recovery from an eating disorder takes time and is a
gradual process.
- Participate in family therapy. It is usually an important part of
treatment.
- Don't let any arguments, blame, guilt, or resentment affect you.
- You can contribute by taking care of yourself.
