Consequences of an Eating Disorder

• Early osteoporosis
• Cholesterol may be high, reflecting a semi-starvation state.
• Loss of menstrual periods
• Growth of lanugo hair, a fuzz on face and extremities
• Often develops carotemia, a yellowing of the skin
• Rapid weight loss
• Preoccupation with weight, dieting, and exercise
• Dizziness, weakness, and moodiness
• Loss of sense of humor
• Delayed puberty
• Loss of hair and breaking of nails

If vomiting is the purge method:

• Swelling of the parotid and/or salivary glands
• Chipmunk appearance
• Numerous dental caries
• Erosions of tooth enamel
• Loss of gag reflex

If laxative abuse is the purge method:

• Constipation and/or diarrhea
• Abnominal bloating
• Dizziness, muscle weakness fatigue, and frequent headaches
• Isolation and avoidant behavior
• Lowered potassium level resulting in cardiac arrythmias

If exercise is the purge method:

• Stress fractures
